The Owl

Being a rather self-aware dog, Bobik realized one day that he'd dropped the ball on protecting the family garden. There were, after all, signs of damage to the vegetables. Teeth marks were discovered on the tomatoes. Onion stalks were nibbled to their base. Branches were torn away from basil bushes. And Swiss Chard leaves were half eaten.

Squirrels, birds and rabbits were no doubt infiltrating the garden.

Around the same time, this Owl appeared.

At first, Bobik thought it was yet another bird trying to damage the vegetables. But as days wore on, it occurred to him that the Owl likely appeared for a more sinister reason.

It kept moving around the perimeter, staying strategically close to the plantings. This made Bobik suspect that maybe it wasn't all that dumb. In fact, privately, he felt he needed to keep an eye out on this Owl because people seemed to trust this thing way too much. So every day, he growled, barked and never took his eyes off the large, ugly bird.

Weird thing was that no sooner would he get used to seeing it among the cucumbers, then it would show up unexpectedly among the beans. And so on. The unpredictability of where this thing would show up next was disconcerting.

One look at the eyes on this bird and you could tell the damn thing couldn't be trusted. The only redeeming factor of living with this dummy was that there were less rodents and birds in the garden. A dog notices these things.
